Frequently asked questions
Most common questions about costings, timelines and process below. If you have a question that’s not answered below please ask.
Costings & Pricing
Yes, there are some ongoing costs to consider beyond the website development quote. You'll need to arrange hosting, domain registration, and email services independently.
For hosting, I recommend Hetzner which offers GDPR-compliant hosting starting at approximately £5 per month for a basic package suitable for most websites.
Domain registration and management can be handled through Hover, with domains typically costing £10-15 annually. For professional email services, Fastmail provides reliable solutions starting around £4.50 per month.
I can help set this up for you. These services are billed directly to you, giving you full control and ownership of your website's infrastructure.
I'd also recommend budgeting for ongoing maintenance to keep your website secure, updated, and running smoothly. Website maintenance typically involves software updates I offer support and maintenance, which can be discussed once your website is complete.
During the initial consultation, I'll provide guidance on selecting the right hosting package for your specific needs and expected traffic levels.
No, reasonable revisions are included in the project price. The design process is collaborative, and I expect some back-and-forth to ensure the final result meets your vision.
However, significant scope changes or complete design direction changes will incur additional charges. For example, if after approving wireframes you decide to completely restructure the template/site or add substantial new functionality, this would be considered a scope change rather than a revision.
Minor adjustments to colours, fonts, spacing, content placement, and similar design elements are all part of the normal design process and included in your quote.
All projects use a straightforward 50/50 payment structure. The first 50% is due upfront to secure your project slot and begin development - this investment covers initial planning and design work, it's non-refundable.
The remaining 50% is due in week 4 of the project timeline, regardless of launch status. Payments are structured this way because project completion depends on client-provided content and materials, which can vary significantly between projects. This ensures development work is compensated on schedule whilst giving you flexibility with content preparation and launch timing.
Once final payment is received, you'll have full access to your completed website files and receive comprehensive handover documentation. The 30-day post-launch support begins whenever you're ready to go live, whether that's immediately or several months later.
This approach has worked well for clients over the years, providing predictable costs whilst accommodating the realities of website project timelines.
The two main factors that influence the final price are the number of custom templates required and the complexity of the design or functionality.
Template requirements vary significantly between projects. A simple brochure site might need 3-4 templates (homepage, about, services, contact), whilst a more comprehensive website could require 8-10 or more unique page layouts. Each custom template involves individual design work, responsive coding, and testing across devices.
Design and functionality complexity also plays a major role in pricing. A straightforward informational website with standard features will be more affordable than a site requiring custom animations, interactive elements, or third-party integrations. Complex functionality takes additional development time and often requires more extensive testing.
Other factors that can influence cost include:
Content management system requirements
SEO optimisation level
Number of revision rounds needed
Integration with existing systems or databases
Specific accessibility requirements
During the initial consultation, I'll assess your specific needs across these areas to provide an accurate quote tailored to your project scope and requirements.
Timelines & Project Schedule
No, custom website development isn't suited to quick turnaround times. Quality web design and development requires careful planning, thoughtful design iteration, thorough testing, and proper documentation - processes that simply cannot be rushed without compromising the final result.
The typical 6-15 week timeline exists for good reason. Each phase builds upon the previous one, and shortcuts inevitably lead to issues that are more costly to fix later than to prevent initially.
If you have an urgent deadline, I'd recommend considering whether a custom website is the right solution for your immediate needs. There may be interim solutions that could work whilst planning for a proper custom build at a later date.
For future projects, I'd suggest beginning the conversation well in advance of any launch deadlines to ensure adequate time for a quality build.
Project timelines vary significantly based on the size and complexity of your requirements. Most custom website projects take between 6-15 weeks from initial consultation to completion.
A small business website with standard functionality typically takes 6-8 weeks, whilst more complex enterprise level sites with custom features or numerous custom page templates can extend to 12-15 weeks.
The timeline includes four key phases:
Planning
Design
Development
Documentation
It's worth noting that client response times can significantly impact the overall timeline. Projects move most efficiently when content, feedback, and approvals are provided promptly at each stage.
During the initial consultation, I'll provide a more specific timeline estimate based on your particular requirements and desired launch date. I'll also outline key milestones and what's needed from you at each stage to keep the project on track.
Most delays occur due to content provision rather than development issues. To keep projects moving forward, I'll typically press on and complete the design and development phases using placeholder content that can be replaced when you have your final materials ready.
This approach ensures the website structure, functionality, and design are completed on schedule, whilst giving you flexibility with content preparation. Once you provide your final content, images, and copy, these can be quickly integrated into the completed framework.
If delays are caused by technical challenges or additional requirements that emerge during development, I'll communicate these as soon as they're identified and discuss any timeline adjustments needed.
The key is maintaining open communication throughout the project. I'll keep you updated on progress at each phase and flag any potential delays early so we can work together to find the best solution.
Process & Working Together
Yes, I provide comprehensive training materials through a private documentation section created specifically for your website.
This includes short, bite-sized video guides that walk you and your team through all the essential CMS functions. The videos are designed to be easily digestible and focus on the specific features and content areas relevant to your website.
These training materials are ideal for brushing up on how to use the content management system whenever you need a refresher. They also serve as a valuable resource for new members of staff who may need to learn the system in the future.
Having these materials available means you're not dependent on remembering everything from a single training session - you can revisit the guides whenever you need them, ensuring you always feel confident managing your website content.
The training videos are provided during the final documentation phase of your project, giving you immediate access to start managing your content independently.
Your involvement varies throughout each phase of the project, with more intensive collaboration at the beginning and key checkpoints throughout.
Planning Phase: We'll meet via Microsoft Teams at least twice per week to establish project requirements, discuss goals, and create the sitemap and wireframes together.
Design Phase: Weekly meetings to review design direction, provide feedback on concepts, and ensure we're aligned on the visual approach before moving to development.
Development Phase: Weekly check-ins to discuss progress and review the private staging site. This allows you to see the website taking shape.
Content Integration: Once I'm actively developing the page templates, I will add content to some areas of the website, but you will be responsible for adding the majority of the website content.
Documentation Phase: In the final week, you'll receive access to the content management system (CMS) and I'll create video documentation showing you how to update and maintain your website.
This structured approach ensures you're informed and involved at every stage whilst maintaining project momentum and efficiency
The 30-day post-launch support period ensures your website runs smoothly during the critical initial weeks after going live.
During this period, I will monitor your website using Google Search Console to track search performance and indexing status. I'll also keep an eye on the error logs to identify and resolve any technical issues that may arise.
This monitoring helps catch potential problems early - things like broken links, server errors, or indexing issues that sometimes only become apparent once the site is live and receiving real traffic.
If any issues are identified during this monitoring period, I'll address them promptly to ensure your website maintains optimal performance and search visibility.
The support period begins when your website officially launches, not when the development work is completed, giving you peace of mind during those important first weeks online.
It's important to clarify that the 30-day support period isn't for making changes - it's specifically for monitoring and fixing any technical issues that may arise after launch.
For ongoing support beyond the initial 30 days, I offer a support and maintenance service with three different packages to choose from. These packages are designed to keep your website secure, updated, and running smoothly over the long term.
If you need additional design or development work - such as new page templates or functionality additions - I'll provide a separate costing for that work based on your specific requirements.
This approach ensures you have options for both routine maintenance and future enhancements, allowing your website to evolve with your business needs whilst maintaining the technical foundation we've built together.
During the project handover, I'll provide details about the available support packages so you can choose the level of ongoing support that best fits your needs.
The initial consultation focuses on understanding your business goals, target audience, and website requirements. From there, the information needed depends on the project phase.
Once we've created a sitemap during the planning stage, we can discuss what specific content I'll need you to provide. This typically includes written copy, images, and any other materials relevant to your pages.
In terms of branding, I'll need access to your logos in both full and single colour versions. If you have brand guidelines documentation, this is incredibly helpful for ensuring the website aligns with your existing brand identity. Brand guidelines help maintain consistency in colours, fonts, tone, and visual style throughout the site.
If you don't have formal brand guidelines, don't worry - I can work with what you have and I can help maintain visual consistency using your existing materials as a reference point.
The key is starting with a clear understanding of your goals, and then we can identify exactly what materials are needed as the project progresses.
