Website not working?

Let's be honest, no-one thinks about their website environment until something goes wrong. I keep websites and servers up to date so you never have to have 'that conversation' with your boss.

What needs updating?

Across all the different layers of technology that power your website, updates can easily reach hundreds per year. If left unmaintained, performance can suffer and security vulnerabilities accumulate.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a popular Linux-based operating system used by many hosting environments.

Official PHP Logo

PHP

PHP is the server-side programming language that runs Laravel and Statamic applications.

Laravel

Laravel is the PHP framework that powers Statamic, providing robust features and security updates.

Statamic

Statamic is a modern content management system (CMS) built on the Laravel framework.

Website maintenance overview

Like many modern Content Management Systems, Statamic uses a patch, point, and major release cycle. Patch and point releases happen frequently - sometimes every few days - but these incremental releases maintain compatibility without breaking existing functionality.

Major releases typically arrive in the first quarter, with Statamic's schedule aligned roughly one month after Laravel's releases. These major updates require more planning, testing, and potential code changes. One major update is included in all maintenance plans.

Core dependencies

While Ubuntu, PHP, Laravel, and Statamic form the foundation of your website maintenance package, I also manage core dependencies like Composer packages and NPM modules that power your site's functionality. These dependencies can receive updates weekly or even daily, with critical security patches sometimes requiring immediate attention.

Server level

At the server level, I keep your web server software current with the latest security patches. Ubuntu releases comprehensive updates that often include multiple individual patches covering security vulnerabilities, system libraries, web server components, and performance enhancements. PHP typically releases updates monthly for bug fixes and quarterly for major security improvements.

Development & Security

Development tools including build systems like Vite receive regular updates to ensure optimal performance and compatibility. Security and monitoring components such as SSL certificates, and intrusion prevention systems also require ongoing maintenance.

Finally, I ensure all Statamic addons and custom code remain compatible and secure as they're updated alongside the core system. Popular addons may release updates monthly, while critical security fixes can appear at any time.

This holistic approach means every component of your website infrastructure stays current, secure, and performing at its best - without you having to track dozens of different update schedules.

Why does it matter?

Keeping Statamic and Ubuntu current isn't just good practice - it's essential for ensuring your site performs reliably all year round.

Security

Updates often contain security patches that address vulnerabilities.

Leaving these unpatched makes your website more susceptible to attacks, potentially leading to malware infections, or compromised servers.

Compliance

Many industries have compliance standards that require systems to be kept up to date for security reasons.

Failing to update could lead to compliance issues, which may have legal or financial consequences.

Stability

Updates frequently include performance enhancements and bug fixes that keep Statamic and Ubuntu running efficiently.

Delaying updates can lead to decreased performance, compatibility issues, and software crashes.

Features

Updates bring improvements that enhance usability and functionality.

Staying current ensures that you have access to the latest tools and capabilities, allowing you to take full advantage of what the Statamic offers.

Support

Software developers focus support on the latest versions.

Running outdated versions may mean you lose access to help or resources when issues arise, making troubleshooting more difficult.

Peace of mind

Knowing your website and server is regularly maintained and up to date allows you to focus on your core business activities without worrying about potential technical issues or security threats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our website maintenance service. All work is handled locally without outsourcing abroad.

Getting Started

We need access to the following:

  • Git repository (E.g. GitHub or BitBucket)

  • Access to server management software (E.g. Ploi or Forge)

  • Access to hosting provider control panel

  • SFTP access

  • SSH access

We can help you pull this information together and liaise with your current IT provider, web developer, or hosting provider to get access to what we need to manage your website and server seamlessly.

Billing

We invoice annually for the full year of service. Payment is due on receipt, and once we have access to your website and servers, we'll get started with your first update.

Annual billing allows us to provide consistent, reliable maintenance throughout your contract period whilst keeping administrative costs low. Invoices include the name of your chosen plan and the maintenance schedule for the year ahead.

There is a 12-month minimum contract period for all maintenance plans.

Process

Yes, we take a fresh backup from your production site before every maintenance update begins. We maintain a local copy of your website and its assets, which is updated by pulling from the production site.

We use Git to version control all updates. This means if (after testing locally and on staging) your website still goes offline as a result of an update on production, we can easily roll back to the previous working version.

The backup process is included as part of our maintenance procedure - you don't need to request it or take any action on your end.

Updates happen locally first, then they're pushed to a staging server, which is a mirror copy of your production site's hosting environment.

On staging, we use specialised software to crawl every page of your website to check it's not returning 5XX or 404 errors. Site functionality (such as contact forms) is tested manually to ensure all features are working correctly.

This dual approach combines automated testing for technical issues across your entire site with human testing for functionality. Only after we're confident that everything is working correctly on the staging environment do we proceed with applying the updates to your production site at a low traffic time.

This thorough testing process is why we maintain both staging and production environments - it allows us to catch and resolve any potential issues before they could affect your visitors or business operations

While issues during updates are rare due to our thorough testing process, if something does go wrong, we follow a clear procedure to restore your site as quickly as possible.

We immediately restore your site from the fresh backup we took before maintenance began, getting your live site back online within minutes. Once your site is operational again, we investigate what went wrong using our local copy and staging environment to identify the root cause.

After diagnosing the problem, we develop and test a solution on the staging environment before attempting the update again. Throughout this process, we keep you informed with regular updates about what's happening and our estimated timeline for completion.

This ensures your site experiences minimal downtime whilst we resolve any unexpected issues safely and thoroughly.

Yes, we'll always notify you in advance before any scheduled maintenance begins. We schedule all maintenance during quiet low-traffic periods and confirm the specific timing with you beforehand. We want to make sure we don't update the website if you're in the middle of a marketing campaign or making content updates in-house.

This advance notice ensures you're fully informed and can plan accordingly if needed.

Maintenance Services

The duration depends on the type of updates being applied. Updates take three forms: Minor, Patch, and Major updates.

Minor and Patch updates for both staging and production servers typically take around 90 minutes to complete. Major updates can take considerably longer when factoring in the additional testing and reporting required for more significant changes.

We'll always inform you in advance which type of updates are scheduled and provide an estimated timeframe for the maintenance window. All updates are performed during quiet low-traffic periods to minimise any impact on your business, and we'll notify you once the maintenance is complete.

The frequency depends on your chosen plan:

  • Essential Plan: Your website is updated four times per year on both staging and production servers.

  • Business Pro Plan: Updates occur six times per year across both environments.

  • Enterprise Plan: Monthly updates for both your website and servers. This plan is ideal for mission-critical sites.

All updates are tested on your staging environment before being deployed to your live site.

Every maintenance update includes comprehensive core system updates to keep your site secure and performing optimally.

We update your Statamic CMS and Laravel framework to their latest stable versions, apply Ubuntu server security patches and system updates, update your PHP configuration, and check and update SSL certificates if needed. A complete site backup is taken before any changes are made.

Our testing and deployment process ensures minimal disruption to your business. We test all updates on your staging environment first, perform checks across your entire site functionality, then deploy changes during quiet low-traffic periods to minimise downtime.

Each plan also includes a fixed number of troubleshooting hours. This can be used to offer CMS support and resolve any technical issues that may arise over the year, including assistance with content management and general site maintenance queries.

Other FAQs

We only offer our three standard maintenance plans: Essential, Business Pro, and Enterprise. These plans are designed to cover the most common maintenance needs for Statamic websites at different business scales.

Not as part of the maintenance service. This service is specifically limited to maintaining your Statamic CMS and the hosting environment to keep everything secure, updated, and running smoothly.

If you need additional functionality added to your website or want specific customisations made, we can arrange a separate quote for that work. This ensures your maintenance service remains focused on the essential updates and security patches, whilst any development work is handled through our standard project process.

Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to discuss any additional changes or improvements to your site - we're always happy to help with a tailored quote for development work.

A regular maintenance schedule is designed to keep your site secure and up-to-date, preventing most urgent situations from arising in the first place.

However, if a critical security vulnerability is discovered that affects your site between scheduled maintenance windows, we'll assess the situation and can apply emergency fixes if necessary. If your plan has unused troubleshooting hours, we'll use these to fix the issue.

Additional blocks of 6 troubleshooting hours can be purchased for £500.

Any development, design, or SEO work is not included in the maintenance service. The service is specifically limited to keeping your Statamic CMS and Ubuntu servers up to date with the latest software.

This means we focus solely on maintaining the technical infrastructure - updating Statamic, Laravel, server software, security patches, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Any additional functionality, design changes, content updates, or search engine optimisation would require a separate quote.

If you need any development or design work alongside your maintenance service, we're happy to provide a tailored quote for those projects.

No, your site will remain online and accessible to visitors throughout the maintenance process. We perform all testing and preparation work on your staging environment first, then deploy updates to your live site using methods that keep it operational.

Our maintenance approach is designed to ensure continuous availability for your business, so your customers can access your site without interruption even while we're updating the underlying systems.
